SOUNDWEAVES

The Work: Fibre Art / A juxtaposition of weaving & music / October 2020

“Music, like weaving, for me is a catalyst for processing and experiencing emotions.

I am fascinated by the similarities between music compositions and weaving patterns. On both sheet music and weaving instructions are, in addition to instructions on instruments, patterns and rhythm, also instructions for the melody. Also its the role storytelling plays in both art forms, and the infinitely different interpretations that are possible by making the instructions of the sheet music or the weaving pattern your own, that resonates with me. ”

In the exhibition Tang & Tango i presented my first juxtaposition of these two art forms, with the Tango song ‘Oblivion’ by Astor Piazzolla.

Tango originated from the homesickness of migrants from all over the world. And thus offers a perfect soundtrack to my work. History shows a cacophony of cultures from Europe, Africa and South America that have contributed to this music and dance style. A wonderful example of the beauty that can arise when we embrace each other’s cultures.

“With a piece of tango music, I have determined the rhythm and pitch of the weave pattern. Together with the audience at the Tang & Tango exhibition I have woven my own melody with it.”
