TANG & TANGO

The Work: Artist participating in this group exhibition in Skals / 8-17 October 2020

TANG & TANGO is a group exhibition organised by Kunstforum Viborg in SKALMA in Skals, Denmark. SKALMA used to be a textile factory, creating furniture textiles out of algae, harvested out of the nearby fjord.

In the exhibition TANG & TANGO, i present the collection of textile work that i have created since moving to Denmark. Weavings, tapestry and quilts show fragments of the different emotions that a person goes through when she leaves friends, language and home for a new start in another country.

/

In addition to this series, i have developed a new work especially for the exhibition called “musicweaves”. “Music, like weaving, for me is a catalyst for processing and experiencing emotions.

I am fascinated by the similarities between music compositions and weaving patterns. On both sheet music and weaving instructions are, in addition to instructions on instruments, patterns and rhythm, also instructions for the melody. Also its the role storytelling plays in both art forms, and the infinitely different interpretations that are possible by making the instructions of the sheet music or the weaving pattern your own, that resonates with me. ”

In the upcoming exhibition Tang & Tango i will present a juxtaposition of these two art forms.

Tango originated from the homesickness of migrants from all over the world. And thus offers a perfect soundtrack to my work. History shows a cacophony of cultures from Europe, Africa and South America that have contributed to this music and dance style. A wonderful example of the beauty that can arise when we embrace each other’s cultures.

“With a piece of tango music, I have determined the rhythm and pitch of the weave pattern. I invite the audience at the Tang & Tango exhibition to weave their own melody with it.”

I was also asked to design the flyers, posters and banners
